Our Story
We believe food is medicine and aim to create an environment where we can produce quality food while making a positive impact to the earth. We are creating a space that replenishes as we grow and raise our food. It’s our highest priority to offer the best quality, natural, sustainable products.
A Fresh Start
We are creating Oak Bear Farm on 40 acres of undeveloped, wooded land in the Shenandoah Valley. This comes with blessings and challenges. We can use and work with the nature that already exists but face substantial burdens of starting pasture, fencing, structures, etc.
-
We strongly oppose the use of any chemical fertilizer or pesticides. We continue to use and learn new ways to manage pests and enrich our soil with what nature provides. We have never used chemical products in our garden.
-
Finding locally sourced, biologically appropriate feed for animals is challenging. We source many of our non-GMO feeds from Sunrise Farms in Virginia. Our goats eat almost exclusively grass, hay and brush with the exception of some grain during milking. Our laying hens forage for the majority of their diet.
-
Our farm is still in the early stages of development. We currently operate under the VA Rabbit Program, VA poultry exemption and VA Cottage laws. These provisions give us the ability to provide our farm products without inspection. We are happy to share our safe handling procedures upon request. It is our goal to expand our product offerings into areas that will force us to begin inspections.
