Have you ever seen the typical meatbird chicken?! Cornish Cross is the most commonly used breed for meat because of their rapid weight gain and few feathers. We’ve raised these birds before and really did not care for how unnatural they seemed. We’ve switched to Freedom Ranger birds and couldn’t be happier. They take longer to reach a desired weight but, boy, is it worth it. The chickens remain fully feathered, they dust-bathe, they forage and all-around live as close to natural lives as possible. We’ve experienced some struggles with protecting our birds from predators in the forest but continue to adapt and remain determined to keep the chickens at the highest possible quality. A forest raised chicken will have stronger legs which translates to bigger leg and thigh meat and a slightly smaller breast than typical grocery store chicken.
